About Forbes Hospice
Modeled after the Royal Victoria program, Forbes Hospice opened its inpatient and homecare programs in 1979, becoming the first hospice program in Pittsburgh. For over 30 years now, Forbes Hospice has provided palliative care and support to terminally ill individuals and their families in the Pittsburgh region.
Forbes Hospice features one of the region’s most comprehensive hospice and palliative care programs offering home care, a dedicated inpatient unit, and bereavement counseling. Our program draws upon a variety disciplines–medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, nutrition and chaplaincy–to create an environment of peace and comfort where dying patients and their loved ones are relieved of physical, emotional and spiritual pain and suffering. Since its founding, Forbes Hospice has helped thousands of terminally ill people live each day to the fullest, surrounded by the comfort of home, family and friends. In the very early days of the program, an average of five patients was cared for each day. Today we serve, on average, 100 patients each day and 900 to 1,000 new patients each year.
Hospice care is provided to any terminally ill person regardless of age, gender, nationality, race, creed, sexual orientation, disability, diagnosis or place of residence. Forbes Hospice‘s scope of care extends from a 1-month-old child with congenital birth defects to a 105-year-old person with end-of-life complications. In addition to patients with cancer, a growing number of individuals with advanced chronic cardiac and pulmonary disease, end-stage neurological diseases –including ALS, Alzheimer’s and AIDS–are benefiting from Forbes Hospice‘s care and expertise. We serve families in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington and Westmoreland counties.
The focus of care is to create a comfortable and peaceful environment in which the patient may live each day to the fullest. For patients with terminal illness, Forbes Hospice emphasizes the quality of life when most curative options are exhausted. Twenty-four hour staff assistance and the respite care to relieve family caregivers add to Forbes Hospice‘s full range of patient and family-centered care. Forbes Hospice is licensed to provide both hospice care and home health care for patients with any advanced disease.
